Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

Cabo Rojo is a city located on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico.  It is bordered by Mayagüez and Hormigueros to the north, San Germán and Lajas to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Mona Passage to the west.  Cabo Rojo's terrain is mostly plain.  However, some notable peaks are Mariquita, Buena Vista, Vargas, and Peñones de Melones.

Tourism has increased in recent years in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.  With Cabo Rojo's beautiful beaches, marinas and hotels have been developed.  Cabo Rojo is also well known for its fishing, and its many seafood restaurants.

The famous Cabo Rojo lighthouse, Los Morrillos Lighthouse, known by locals as El Faro, was built in 1881 over limestone cliffs that rise 200 feet above sea level.  The lighthouse is simple in architecture and the illuminating apparatus is housed in a cast-iron, copper and glass lantern.  Los Morrillos Lighthouse was automated in 1967, but was originally operated by two keepers and an engineer, who lived on the lighthouse with their families.  Faro Los Morrillos is known to have some spectacular ocean views in the West Coast of Puerto Rico.

National protected areas in Cabo Rojo are: The National Wildlife Refuge, home for a number of native bird species including the endangered Yellow-shouldered Blackbird also known as La Mariquita de Puerto Rico, and The Boqueron State Forest, one of seven state forests managed by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.

United Airlines Starts Nonstop Service From Chicago To Puerto Rico

United Airlines will start daily flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Starting on November 5, daily flights will depart Chicago at 8:20 a.m., arriving in San Juan at 2:57 p.m.  The return flight will depart San Juan at 3:55 p.m. and arrive in Chicago at 7:13 p.m.  The aircraft on the route will be a Boeing 737-900.  United Airlines, also plans to add an additional daily flight during the holiday season of Dec. 4 to Jan. 5.

San Juan, Puerto Rico has always been a very popular destination in the Caribbean.  San Juan has  beautiful beaches, major hotels and resorts, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and colonial architecture and historic forts in Old San Juan.

Top No Cost Things To Do In Puerto Rico

If you are visiting Puerto Rico and you have to stay on budget, here are the top things you can do in Puerto Rico with no money:

Old San Juan:  With its cobblestone and narrow streets, Old San Juan is a must see for its colonial charm.  You can find shops, restaurants, and museums, as well as historical sites like El Morro Fort and La Fortaleza, the governors mansion.  Old San Juan has some great views of the San Juan Bay.

El Yunque Rain Forest:  Take a half-hour drive from San Juan, to the tropical rain forest, for a hike along the trails.

Pinones:  This area, ten minutes from Isla Verde, is popular with the locals on the weekends during the day, where people can walk through many kiosk that have traditional fritters.  You can view how they are made and enjoy the views of the ocean.  The fritters and drinks are not free, but they are inexpensive.

Beaches:  There are many beaches in Puerto Rico.  In the San Juan area you can find Isla Verde Beach, the best beach in the area. 

Live Music:  Music is a big part of the Puerto Rican culture.  You can listen to live bands playing Salsa and Merengue at most hotels in Puerto Rico at no cost.  For live music outdoors, La Placita, at Plaza del Mercado in Santurce is a popular spot.  Of course drinks and food are not included.

Window Shopping:  Pureto Ricans love to shop, and their favorite place is at the largest mall in The Caribbean, Plaza Las Americas.  Plaza Las Americas is the place If you want to escape the heat, or rain, people watch, and do some window shopping.  It will cost you nothing, unless you buy something.
