Condado Or Isla Verde, Puerto Rico
Many times I have been asked, where to stay in the San Juan area of Puerto Rico? Isla Verde or Condado? The answer, it depends on your individual taste.
Isla Verde and Condado are very similar, in what they offer, with just a few differences:
Isla Verde
The main attraction in Isla Verde is the beach. Isla Verde beach is the best beach in the San Juan area, was voted one of the best urban beaches in the world and is a favorite of tourist and local residents. Resorts hotels and condominiums, surround this three mile long, uninterrupted beach, lined with coconut palm trees, and white sand. Many water sports: jet skiing, kitesurfing, and parasailing are practiced by local water sport enthusiast and tourist. Beach rental services are available.
The main strip in Isla Verde, Isla Verde Avenue, is two blocks from the beach. Here you will find many places to eat and drink, as well as many night life activities. The area is very walkable to hotels, restaurants, bars, and night clubs. Some favorite local restaurants are: Platos, MiCasita, and Metropol.
Isla Verde is centrally located to other tourist areas of San Juan. Isla Verde is 15 minutes from Condado and 20 minutes from Old San Juan. Other popular towns on the island, like Fajardo, and Humacao, are easy to get to from Isla Verde. Also, Isla Verde is about an hour from El Yunque Rain Forest, and five minutes from San Juan's International Airport.
Condado
Condado is located between Old San Juan and Isla Verde. The area has numerous hotels, restaurants, and nightlife activities. The landmark hotels: Vanderbilt Hotel, and La Concha Resort are located here. Condado is a residential area with an adjacent lagoon on one side and on the other the ocean.
The main avenue, Ashford Avenue has many shops, restaurants, casinos, and nightclubs.
The area of Condado is more dense with people and buildings. It is more city like and it is closer to Old San Juan than Isla verde.
Both Isla Verde and Condado are great locations, but if your priority is the beach, then Isla Verde is the location for you!

5- Shop- Many stores await in Old San Juan and Condado. You can also visit the largest mall in the Caribbean, Plaza Las Americas and The San Juan Mall, for higher end stores.

Puerto Rico makes for the perfect romantic getaway destination. Puerto Rico is a tropical island with beautiful beaches, many places to explore, great nightlife and shopping. Here are the top romantic activities in Puerto Rico:

Many places in Old San Juan, Condado, and Isla Verde to enjoy music and dancing. In Puerto Rico the music lasts until the early hours of the morning.
Swim in El Yunque:
El Yunque National Rainforest located in the northeastern mountains of the island, and the only tropical rainforest in North America, it is a great place to hike the trails and swim in its waterfalls. Couples should take La Mina Trail, which leads to La Mina Falls, where you can swim in the dipping pool and enjoy the waterfall.

Hotels In San Juan, Puerto Rico Receive WellHotel Certification
The Caribe Hilton and The Condado Plaza Hotel have received a WellHotel™ certification in Puerto Rico. Both hotels completed an intensive training and evaluation program offered through the Medical Tourism Association and The Puerto Rico Medical Tourism Corporation.
The WellHotel certification program offers a unique curriculum that fosters effective interaction among hotel administrative and service personnel with patients, medical providers, and ground operators. The Caribe Hilton and Condado Plaza participated in the WellHotel training program that ensured their services were responsive to medical guests from safety requirements and interpersonal communication to cultural sensitivity protocols and disease prevention practices.
The Puerto Rico Medical Tourism is campaigning to market the healthcare services in Puerto Rico to international patients. This is expected to create some 3,000 jobs. In addition to The Caribe Hilton and The Condado Plaza, other hotels in Puerto Rico are expected to complete the WellHotel certification requirements.

New Hotel Will Be Built In The Condado Area Of Puerto Rico
The construction of a new hotel to be built in the Condado area of Puerto Rico was announced by The Puerto Rico Tourism Company. The hotel will be the first in four decades to be built from scratch in the Condado area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Demolition of two condominium buildings purchased by the Tourism Company will make room for the new hotel. At a cost of 30 million, the boutique hotel is intended to provide detailed attention to guests, sophisticated rooms and a contemporary style.
The hotel development will create about 375 direct and indirect jobs during its construction phase and 150 direct and indirect jobs during the operational phase.
Construction of the new hotel will begin in 2016 and hotel operations will begin in 2017.

Gay Friendly Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a friendly island to gays and lesbians. In San Juan there are many gay-friendly hotels, restaurants, and clubs. The areas of Condado, Ocean Park, and Santurce are popular with the gay crowd. The beaches at Condado and Ocean Park are also popular. In Ocean Park you can find a number of guesthouses, like Coqui del Mar, gay owned and operated, and it is known for welcoming gays and lesbians from around the world. In recent years the artsy area of Santurce has become popular.
San Juan's gay hotspots include: El Chinchorro, Scandalo, VIP, Tia Maria, Splash Lounge, Oasis Bar Tapas & Lounge, Angelu's, Circo, The Male Depot, and Krash Klub, which has occasional live music and drag shows. For women, Airenumo Lounge, and Cups, which has live music and is a tropical bar. In Old San Juan, near San Sebastian street, in the Hotel El Convento, The Café Bohemia, is another popular spot.
On the first Sunday, in June a gay pride parade takes place in Condado and is preceded by a week of events, and the annual San Juan Brothas gay parade, held each Memorial Day, is an annual highlight.
Other welcoming areas include the town of Ponce, in the south, Rincón in the west; and the island of Vieques in the east, however the local population in these areas, outside of San Juan, is more conservative. Something to keep in mind, is that Puerto Rico is strongly Catholic and state laws are not as tolerant of homosexuality. In San Juan and in small towns, displays of affection between same-sex couples can cause problems.

The Camuy Cave Park
Located in Camuy, is one of the largest cave systems in the world, and one of the most popular natural attractions in Puerto Rico.
Arecibo Lighthouse
Located in Arecibo, the park next to the lighthouse has a museum on seafaring. In the winter, whales can be spotted from the lighthouse.
The Mayagüez Zoo
Great zoo for the kids on the west coast of Puerto Rico. The zoo has a African wildlife park with elephants, giraffes, lions, rhinos, tigers, big apes, and camel rides.
Museo del Niño in San Juan
This is a two-level museum for kids. It has exhibits from hurricanes to interactive human biology, and a NASA Space Place with interactive displays.
Condado Lagoon
Enjoy some kayaking and paddle surfing in the lagoon located in Condado.

Renovations For Ventana Del Mar In San Juan, Puerto Rico
The Ventana del Mar park in Condado, Puerto Rico, will be going through some renovations. Improvements will be made by repaving and repairing the concrete boardwalk, installing sea-turtle friendly lighting and reinforcing safety railings. Palm trees will be added and grassy areas will be installed. Recreational areas around the east tower of the Condado Vanderbilt will also be created.
Ventana del Mar, is an open park between the Condado Vanderbilt and La Concha hotel and is a popular place for locals and tourists. Ventana del Mar offers open-air movie screenings and Jazz concerts.
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company and International Hospitality Enterprises are behind the renovations. The renovation to Ventana del Mar will be completed in a couple of months.

Plans For A Boardwalk In The Tourist Areas Of San Juan, Puerto Rico
The Puerto Rico government is planning a $29 million investment in a boardwalk linking Old San Juan with other popular tourism areas in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Paseo Puerta de Tierra would give pedestrians and cyclists safer and easier access to the Condado tourism area as well as the Convention Center District. The Paseo Puerta de Tierra would include oceanfront sections along Muñoz Rivera Avenue heading into Old San Juan. There are also plans for a terraced park overlooking the Atlantic Ocean between Escambrón Beach and the Capitol building.
The Paseo Puerta de Tierra project will create 300 jobs and it includes: a $4.3 million in improvements to Tren Street to serve as the bus route in Old San Juan, $4.5 million to improve the connection for cyclists and pedestrians between Condado and the San Juan Islet, and a $15.6 million walkway along the oceanfront Muñoz Rivera Avenue from Escambrón Beach to the Capitol.

Casinos In Puerto Rico
If you enjoy gambling, Puerto Rico is the place for you. There are many casinos in Puerto Rico and the majority are located in the San Juan area. Even if you do not play, casinos are still fun to visit. The casinos are all located in hotels, have live entertainment, bars and the majority are open 24 hours. Casinos are open every day of the year, except Good Friday. Casinos are open to all whether you are a hotel guest or not, as long as you are 18 years old and properly dressed (no t-shirts or shorts).
