Santurce, Puerto Rico Wants To Be The Art And Design District

Santurce, a neighborhood in San Juan, and not to far from the tourist areas of Old San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde, wants to be the new art and design district of San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Some parts of Santurce are not very attractive.  There are plenty of neglected low rise buildings, and modest shops. Also, parts of Santurce are not safe at night.  But recently, the area is slowly going through some changes.  It is attracting young artists, design studios, exhibition spaces, music venues and galleries.

These creative new residents have brought some life back to the neighborhood. The character of the area, and the affordable real estate, compared to Old San Juan, has helped with the transformation.   Old San Juan, used to be the city's art mecca, but is has become to expensive, for young artists and gallery owners.

Covering contemporary art, established  galleries like Espacio 1414 and Petrus are part of the art scene in Santurce.   Other galleries are: c787 studios, and La Respuesta, home to Puerto Rico's underground artists.
